An agent (who shall remain nameless, just in case he doesn't want to feature on a blog like this) has asked for the rest of the book, which I will send off tomorrow.
My hopes are still being squashed by the thumb of realism and astronomical odds, but this is a step in the right direction.
Incidentally, I am currently reading Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead, which is brilliant. It was rejected 12 times before finding a publisher, so that makes me feel better. And, since Insecticide is possibly the Fountainhead of genetically modified insect novels, I can say that it all feels spookily appropriate.
congratulations, hunny. And thumbs up, crossed fingers, knots in handkerchief etc...... positive thoughts and good karma going on here!
